Aug 08 - Cleaning Up the Marines Monument

08 August 2014

marine Three Royal Marines from British Forces Gibraltar have spent the afternoon cleaning up the Royal Marines Monument located in Ocean Village.

Corporal Adam Carter, Marine Josh Lunn and Marine Euan Clark from Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron all wanted to help maintain the special monument which bears their cap badge and an inscription detailing the historic link with Gibraltar.

The Royal Marines’ long history of association with Gibraltar dates back to the participation of early Marine Regiments in its capture in July 1704 and their subsequent gallant defence of the Rock during the first siege.

In 1827 King George IV, faced with having to choose battle honours from an extensive list, decided that the Royal Marines’ Colours would in future bear the symbol of the “Great Globe itself” and that thereafter the only battle honour on Royal Marines’ Colours would be that of Gibraltar.

The Corps were granted the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar in 1996 and the monument was unveiled and dedicated to the Royal Marines on the 28th February 2009.

This year is the 350th Anniversary of the Royal Marines and there will be a charity celebration weekend on the 24th to 26th October 2014. The weekend will consist of a Charity Rock Run on Saturday morning followed by a Charity Gala Reception held in the Convent on Saturday evening and on Sunday evening there will be a Royal Marines Charity Concert by the Royal Marines Band in Saint Michael's cave.
