May 20 - Youngsters Develop the Alameda Garden Club
The children of the Alameda Gardening Club have been working very hard this year to produce a wide variety of planting projects for everyone to see and enjoy whilst visiting the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. As well as the decorative theme bed, which will be officially opened on Tuesday June 3rd, they have planted 2 further beds at the top of the gardens, near the Alameda Wildlife Park.
One bed is teeming with towering Sunflowers, which will look amazing once they come into bloom and will really brighten up this quiet corner of the garden. Each Sunflower has been named by its ‘owner’ and everyone at the club is excited to see whose will grow the tallest.
The other bed is now rich with vegetable plants and the children are itching to harvest the fruits of their labours. Keeping watch over the precious produce is Pollyanna, a beautiful scarecrow that the gardening club created to enter into the scarecrow competition as part of the Gibraltar Horticultural Society’s Garden Show. The judges of the Horticultural Society awarded her first place in their competition.
The gardening club has been running in its current form since January and will come to a season’s close at the beginning of June. The Alameda has a new Facebook Page where you can keep track of various projects going on in the gardens, including the work of the Children’s Gardening Club. But why not come along soon and visit the gardens to see the children’s hard work for yourselves?
There will be children’s gardening activity days on Tuesdays and Thursdays during August as part of the GSLA summer programme for children aged between 6 and 12. Look out at the end of June for the GSLA Summer Programme directory for further information.
