Nov 01 - Gibraltar Museum Representatives Discuss Gibraltar’s ‘Underwater Cultural Heritage’ in Sicily
Dr Darren Fa of the Gibraltar Museum recently returned from Sicily where he was invited to present the latest findings of the Gibraltar Museum’s Underwater Research Unit at the ‘Euploia Conference: Underwater Cultural Heritage Best Practices in a Mediterranean Context.’ The Organisers of the event were Sicily’s Superintendenza del Mare and USA’s Stanford University; countries represented at the meeting included Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Albania, Turkey and Tunisia.
Dr Fa gave a presentation entitled 'Underwater Cultural Heritage in Gibraltar: a Case Study of Integrated Management Policies within a Small Territory’ which was very well received. The study, which is part of an ongoing museum strategy for the co-ordinated protection of our submerged heritage, is a development of similar models applied to heritage on land that have been at the forefront of heritage management thinking in recent years. A publication on good practice management strategies in the Mediterranean is expected to follow from the discussions at the Sicily conference.
