In a statement, Equality Rights Group Chairman Felix Alvarez has expressed ‘much gratitude and appreciation for the public position the Chief Minister has expressed with regard to the Thumbs Up Campaign’s efforts in lobbying for the British government to seriously consider the people of Gibraltar’s historical and multiple merits with regards to the awarding of a suitable honour to the Rock.’

‘Mr Picardo clearly and intelligently elucidated the issues at hand: firstly, that the Campaign’s efforts on behalf of Gibraltar in no way demeans individuals or past collective merits recognised, such as Malta’s or the RUC’s, but that we stand on our own justifiable merits. And, secondly, that there is some very real history of Gibraltarians’ sacrifices in loyalty to the Crown which Britain must give serious consideration to.

‘With the increasing parliamentary and media support the Campaign (jointly run by Equality Rights Group and the UK Friends of Gibraltar with the most appreciated Westminster support of Conservative MP Oliver Colvile and others) being received, the Chief Minister’s supportive remarks in the Scottish Express can only assist the Campaign as we move forward with increasing momentum.’
