This weekend Gibraltar commemorated the Battle of Britain with a series of events. The RAF building found to the south of the runway was renamed The Rene Mouchotte building in memory of a French Air Force Pilot who died following the Battle of Britain. The unveiling was carried out by Air Chief Marshall Sir Stuart Peach. The event was attended by TV Presenter Jan Leeming, who recently produced a documentary on Rene Mouchette, for the BBC.
Rene managed to land his aircraft in Gibraltar, despite the propellers having been disabled. He and five comrades fled Oran to join to the Free French forces. From Gibraltar, the men managed to sail to England.The commemorations also saw a flypast carried out by RAF Typhoon jets.
