July 01 - Improvements Planned For Cemetery

01 July 2013

The Government is planning a number of improvements at the North Front Cemetery.

Last year new benches were placed around the Cemetery and a number of trees were provided as a first step in beautification. A vegetation management plan is now being developed, as well as a number of planting schemes in some areas.

The Board of Visitors to the Cemetery has been re-formed and expanded, under the Chairmanship of the Reverend David Hoare, and has met for the first time in many years, with regular meetings planned after the summer. Its membership includes representatives of different religious denominations, the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, the Ornithological and Natural history Society, as well as independent members.

At the same time, the Cemetery Act, which dates from 1889, is being reviewed.

Taken together, the Government hopes that the North Front Cemetery will improve is appearance and at the same time be appreciated more as both the resting place of many Gibraltarians, and as a part of our rich heritage.
