June 07 - Busy Time For Army Cadets

07 June 2013

cadetsDuring a recent visit to Gibraltar’s Army Cadet Unit at Buffadero Training Centre, His Excellency the Governor announced that Cadet Corporal James Cpl James Aguilera would be the first ‘Governor’s Cadet.’ As the first cadet to hold this new title, James will take part in both the Queen’s Birthday parade and the Governor’s Garden Party in his new role and wearing his new badge of office.

The Governor also toured various cadet activities, including radio communications, expedition planning, weapon handling and ‘Fire Orders.’

The unit, which is entirely funded and resourced by HM Government of Gibraltar, now has over 60 cadets, including three girls. “But we will be looking to recruit more girls in the next intake in January 2014,” said the Officer Commanding, Captain Alan Montegriffo.

“We are very grateful that His Excellency has found time to visit the unit and we are proud that he has appointed the first ‘Governor’s Cadet.’”

Last Saturday the Cadets carried out a Community Project at Mount Alvernia where they cleared, and tidied the gardens as part of the 3 Star Award element of their training syllabus. The unit has now agreed to maintain the gardens on a regular basis.

On the same day as the gardens were being cleared, the Cadets Unit also supported the Buddy Walk by collecting funds for the Down Syndrome Support Group Gibraltar (DSSGG). After this year’s walk, the Cadets were presented with the Junior Prize for collecting the most money during the 2012 Buddy Walk.
