May 21 - GHA Works Towards GMC Registration for Doctors
Following a Government Manifesto Commitment to reform the medical regulation system within Gibraltar, the statutory regulatory body for doctors in Gibraltar, the Medical Registration Board, was asked to look into the feasibility of regulatory reform. The GSLP-Liberal Part promised to outsource to the GMC the assessments of doctors of licences to practice. They also insisted that they would make the GMC the regulatory body for the medical profession, in Gibraltar.
As the first step in the process of change, the Board will meet with all GHA doctors on Thursday, in order to present its findings to them and to discuss it recommendations and outline pathways for the future.
A GHA statement released today added, ‘the medical profession is highly respected in the community and high standards are expected of them. Medical regulation is therefore a complex process involving legal frameworks, clinical standards and regulatory procedures. A delegation of the Board visited the London offices of the GMC in January this year and had discussions on the subject. After reviewing the circumstances in detail, the Board submitted a formal paper to the Government setting out their recommendations.’
