Mar 19 - Women’s Monument Competition Winner Represents Strength of Women in Gibraltar Through the Ages
Yesterday evening, Minister for Equality, Samantha Sacramento announced the winner of the Women’s Monument competition that was launched by the previous administration. The competition saw entrants design a sculpture that is set to be built on the Sundial Roundabout.
23 entries were submitted for the contest and judged by the Ministry for Culture.
Speaking at a reception, held by His Worship the Mayor yesterday, Ms Sacramento explained that many of the entries were extremely original designs. She added that the winning entry, by mother-of-two, Ruth Macias Greenberg, successfully captures a very strong theme, showing the strength of women, through the ages, in Gibraltar.
The winning sculpture depicts three women carrying a stylized representation of the Rock of Gibraltar. The design is titled, ‘The Strength of a Woman, can carry the weight of the World’, Ms Sacramento said that she could clearly resonate with how Ruth describes her vision for women in Gibraltar’s Society.
The Minister also presented four highly commended certificates to entrants Stephen Wong, Terrance Orciel, Gillaine Vanessa Pau and Alan John Perez, for their impressive entries.
Also present at the reception was Environment Minister Dr. John Cortes, Traffic Minister Paul Balban, Opposition member Isobel Ellul-Hammond and Culture Minister Steven Linares.
