The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has announced the publication of The Gibraltar Heritage Journal, Volume 30. 

A statement from the Gibraltar Heritage Trust follows below:

To mark this important milestone, we launched our 30th edition with a two-evening seminar in City Hall and invited new and existing contributors to speak about their interest in Gibraltar’s history and the importance of writing for the journal. 

In our 30th edition, we introduce new contributors and bring back original writers. Our Preface begins with a celebration of ecclesiastical anniversaries this year, including the 150th Anniversary of the first stone laid for the foundations of Sacred Heart Church. We dive into our first article with Joyce’s Choices which traces back a family history. We then move swiftly into another, The ‘Governor’s Right-hand Man’: Harry Norton and the Norton Family in Gibraltar.  This is followed by a piece from our Editor which showcases, Early Depictions of Barbary Macaques on Gibraltar Picture Postcards; before travelling back to WWI in Rock Warriors: Gallantry Award Recipients of World War One. A  jump forward in time to WWII subjects with, The Vulnerability of Tunnels on the North Face of the Rock, and Bombproof Berths for Royal Navy Submarines in Gibraltar; we then explore the effects of the Yellow Fever epidemics in Calomel, ‘Purifying Airs’ and the Encampment: Gibraltar’s Military Experience with Yellow Fever in 1804 and 1828; and discover that Gibraltar once had a golf course in The Golf Course in Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Golf Club with reminiscences from the author. Next, we re-visit St. Michael’s cave again in St. Michael’s Cave – Part II: Descriptions of the Cave in the Nineteenth Century; and finally, we learn about our Victorian artillery in 100 Ton Guns and the Visit to Gibraltar in 1883 of the Italian Squadron. 

Our Notes & Queries section includes a short biography on The Rev. John White; a ponder on the origin of the name Zoca Flank Battery; and a commemoration to Admiral Sir George Rooke.
