May 28 - Deputy Chief Minister Congratulates New European Parliament Members
The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, as Minister for European Affairs, yesterday wrote to congratulate the six new Members of the European Parliament who were elected on Sunday to represent Gibraltar and the South West.
The six members of the European Parliament for the Combined Region of the South West and Gibraltar are Ann Widdecombe, James Glancy and Cristina Jordan from the Brexit Party, Caroline Voaden and Martin Horwood for the Liberal Democrats and Molly Scott Cato for the Green Party.
A statement from the Government follows below:
Dr Garcia had told our new MEPs that “we are at a pivotal moment in the history of our shared relationship with the European Union and the challenges that lie ahead are plenty.”
The European elections took place against the background of continued uncertainty with regard as to how Gibraltar and the United Kingdom will leave the European Union, or indeed whether we will leave at all. The policy of the Government is that it is in our best interests to remain.
The Deputy Chief Minister has stressed, nonetheless, that the Government looks forward to cooperating with our new MEPs and added that it will provide every assistance possible in the defence of the interests of the people of Gibraltar in the European Parliament and before the institutions of the European Union.
