Jul 18 – GDP Constable Retires After 42 Years Of Service In MoD
Derek Baglietto, PC117, recently retired from the Gibraltar Defence Police having completed 42 years of loyal service to the Ministry of Defence.
Derek began his career in 1974, as an apprentice at the Electrical Fitters Section at the Naval Base. After successfully completing his apprenticeship Derek stayed in this role for sixteen years and in time was promoted to foreman of the section.
In May 1990 Derek’s career took a completely different direction and he joined the GDP. During a distinguished career he carried out a range of diverse duties including guarding the airfield and patrolling duties. Latterly Derek’s duties have been primarily in the control room. It was in this position that he was able to very visibly demonstrate his dedication and commitment to the MOD and Gibraltar, constantly looking for ways to make improvements. Derek treated everyone he came into contact with respect and greeted everyone with a smile.
Looking back at his career Derek said:
“I have enjoyed my time working in the Ministry of Defence and I have a lot of respect for many people that have come across my path during this time. I joined the force in 1990 and have never looked back; I would recommend the younger generation to pursue this career if the opportunity arose. Many thanks to all my colleagues.
A farewell event for Derek was held at the new GDP HQ at the Naval Base and officers from all ranks gathered to give him a cordial send off.
Chief Police Officer, Rob Allen, said:
“In a Force that has continued to evolve through time PC Derek Baglietto has consistently demonstrated the can-do attitude and professionalism that we, and those we serve, so value. On behalf of the GDP and the MOD I wish Derek a very long and happy retirement.”
