Sep 17 - Spanish Government Threatens Legal Action Against Gibraltar in European Court of Justice

17 September 2013

spanish flagSpain has allegedly insisted that it will take the fishing dispute in Gibraltar to the European Court of Justice, if Britain is not sanctioned by the EU Commission during their visit to the Frontier.

The statement was made by Agriculture and Environment Minister Manuel Arias Canete in Jerez de la Frontera last Friday. Spanish press reports that Madrid insists Gibraltar has violated EU laws by dropping the artificial reef into the bay.

Sr. Canete claimed that the case would concentrate on what Spain claim to be three violations of environmental law including the artificial reef, the extension of breakwaters and bunkering.

Reports note that Canete believes that Brussels is obligated to ensure that EU law is fulfilled.

During previous interviews with YGTV, Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has welcomed the Spanish Government’s threats to introduce the matter in the European Court of Justice.
