Aug 18 - Commissioner “Disappointed” At Level Of Driver Misbehaviour
The Commissioner of the Royal Gibraltar Police, Edward Yome, has today expressed his disappointment at the level of driver misbehaviour detected during Operation Roadwatch.
A focused enforcement period running from the 14th of July through to the 3rd of August saw a significant number of offences disclosed:
Operation Roadwatch is the organisation’s banner operation with regard to roads policing. And whilst the three strands of Operation Roadwatch continue to be education, awareness and enforcement, the RGP says it will not shy away from strict enforcement should it be necessary to do so.
Nevertheless, the RGP stresses that the overall aim continues to be to encourage good road user behaviour and reduce the number of serious traffic accidents. It is evident, said a spokesperson, that exceeding the speed limit, driving whilst using a mobile phone or contravening traffic signs and traffic lights are contributory factors in road traffic accidents.
The RGP says it will continue to work with other stakeholders to educate road users and improve awareness on road safety, adding that these remain the “preferred methods.”
