Aug 21 - Woman Caught By CCTV Faces “Dangerous Littering” Charge
A local woman was handed a six month conditional discharge after being summoned to the Magistrates’ Court to face one charge of dangerous littering.
Prosecutor James Lennane said she was seen dumping rubbish on the pavement at the entrance to City Mill Lane Car Park on CCTV footage.
The woman said she had seen no signs saying dumping rubbish in the area was illegal, and instead of leaving some pieces of wood from an old cupboard outside her front door, she took it to the area outside the car park thinking it was the correct place to dispose of it after seeing other items of household waste there.
The court clerk explained that there was a law dating back nearly 30 years for dangerous littering, but that previously this was never enforced because of a lack of CCTV evidence.
The Lay Magistrates did not impose a fine, and instead gave her a conditional discharge for six months.
