Oct 29 - Chinese National Cleared Of “Meat Cleaver” Threat

29 October 2015

A Chinese national who was acquitted at the Supreme Court has been detained by RGP officers after being released from custody today.

Xieo Wang was arrested in February earlier this year after allegedly getting into an argument with his boss at a restaurant where he worked, during which he was said to have “waved a meat cleaver in his face”.

Wang was arrested and charged with one count of criminal damage, one count of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and one count of being a non-Gibraltarian in Gibraltar without a permit.

The Chief Justice Anthony Dudley ruled that Wang was not guilty of attempted GBH with intent on the basis that the Crown had no evidence against him. He sentenced Wang to time served for the criminal damage.

Wang, who claimed to have lived in Spain for the past 20 years, said his residency in Spain had expired. He is now in police custody while the RGP arrange to allow him to return to Spain or deport him back to China.

Ricky Rhoda QC appeared for the Crown, assisted by Ishbel Armstrong. Leigh Debono appeared for the defendant.
