Mar 24 - Earth Hour Returns This Saturday
This Saturday will mark the ninth edition of Earth Hour, which will see a twenty-four time zones across six continents band together for an hour, to ‘unify a global community bound by individual actions on climate’.
Participants will turn off all lights, or all unessential lights in their home or business for an hour, as from 8:30pm local time. Dr. Cortes is delighted to support Earth Hour once again and will turn the North Facing lights on the Rock, as well as the Moorish Castle lights, off for the whole weekend.
Other iconic landmarks across the World to support the movement are London’s Buckingham Palace, Times Square in New York, Toronto’s CN Tower, Cape Town’s Table Mountain, Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers, the Statue of David in Florence, Niagara Falls, Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower and the Las Vegas Strip.
Commenting on the movement, Sudhanshu Sarronwala, Chair, Board of Directors, Earth Hour Global, noted, ‘Earth Hour is the world’s most enduring people’s movement focused on climate. The lights may go out for one hour, but the actions of millions throughout the year will inspire the solutions required to change climate change.’
Supporters worldwide will also use Earth Hour to promote climate change solutions. From ‘Earth Hour Loans’ that support solar power installation to ‘Earth Hour Forests’ aimed at fighting deforestation.
In 2014 alone, Earth Hour supporters raised funds to plant millions of trees, promote the use of fuel-efficient stoves and reduce the carbon footprint of thousands of schools.
